Profile

Sean Cain has developed over the years into a pillar of the golf maintenance industry for both his course conditioning practices and superb golf game. His history of providing clubs with a championship-caliber golf course speaks for itself and the pedigree of these clubs no doubt showcase his status as a sought-after industry leader

Sean started his career at a local course in his hometown of Schenectady, New York. Working summers, Sean quickly gained a healthy respect for course conditions and wanted to learn more about the entire process. So, when college began, it was natural for him to study Turfgrass Management. During his time at The University of Rhode Island, Sean got an opportunity to intern at one of the best clubs in the country, The Stanwich Club, in Greenwich, Connecticut. Under the tutelage of Superintendent Scott Niven, an award-winning industry veteran, Sean gained extensive knowledge in the importance of attention to detail on the course. He performed his duties so well that he was invited back the following year for a rare second internship at the exclusive club.

Upon graduation, Sean's strong work ethic and industry skills led to his return to the New York City area at the historic Apawamis Club in Rye, New York. This original Donald Ross layout served as Sean's first experience as a direct manager of a course, as its Assistant Superintendent. Here, he honed his expertise in turf management and learned many leadership qualities he utilizes today. After four years of experience at Apawamis under Superintendent Jeff Scott, Sean decided it was time to manage his own facility.

So, when another Met area course opened up in 1996, Sean enthusiastically applied for the position. He was awarded the Superintendent title at Sunningdale Country Club, where he remains today. Over the course of his tenure here Sean has become known for providing exceptional course conditions on a daily basis. He has also been integral in the restoration of the course, rebuilding all 18 holes with architect Mike Devries from 2006-2017. And in 2021 Shawn finally finished the daunting task of becoming Audubon International Certified for Cooperative Sanctuary Program for golf courses

Sean is also an avid golfer that has won many title throughout his career. He boasts 2 GCSAA National 2-Ball Championships, 2 MetGCSA Golf Championships, and a MetGCSA 2-Baill Championship. This superb golf game allows Sean to understand how course conditions relate to playability and can be an incredible reference for members regarding play and maintenance.

Sea also realizes a key to success is a well-rounded and balanced life, This means spending time away from the course now and then. While the course is covered in snow, Sean travels to Stowe, Vermont, where he enjoys skiing and spending time with family at their home.
